NIZAM'S INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES ( NIMS ) is the premier post graduate medical Institution with University status in Andhra Pradesh state with full-time teaching faculty, striving for excellence in medical care, post graduate education and CME.

RESEARCH SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF DIABETES IN INDIA ( RSSDI ) is the largest organization of diabetes health care professionals and researchers in India. RSSDI provides non-formal education in diabetes to primary care clinicians practicing in rural areas. RSSDI Continuing Medical Education programs are organized at NIMS and many teaching hospitals throughout the country for last 25 years, and since 1994 all RSSDI CME activities are coordinated from NIMS, Hyderabad.

SCHOOL OF DIABETOLOGY was inaugurated on the World Diabetes Day, November 14, 1998 in NIMS campus. For this purpose, construction in 1800 sft of first floor space and in another 2000 sft ground floor space was completed as generous donations of Rs.2,100,000 were received.

For establishing the School of Diabetology in NIMS, total financial support solicited from donors is Rs.5,000,000. [ Rs.2,500,000 for construction; Rs.500,000 for audio-visual, computer and library facilities; and Rs.1,000,000 as fixed deposit in bank for utilizing the annual interest accrued for supporting two fellowship programs in diabetes ].

Further efforts to raise additional finances for making this prestigious national diabetes facility at NIMS, fully operational are currently under way.

OBJECTIVES

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
organization and carrying out of professional training, post graduate teaching, evaluation of health personnel in diabetology by the National Accreditation Committee and its activities throughout the country
    RESEARCH
    to teach diabetes research methodology to post graduate students, and to encourage and supervise related research projects to assist the Institutional and other Governmental agencies in designing of research studies and collection of epidemiological data on the raising impact of chronic non- communicable diseases like metabolic and cardiac problems

    ESTABLISHING MODEL DIABETES HEALTH CARE SERVICES
    for providing on-site TRAINING for PROFESSIONALS, EDUCATORS and PARAMEDICS in the following activities :

    Timely (early) DIAGNOSIS and MANAGEMENT of DIABETES and related COMPLICATIONS
    providing expertise to the clinical staff of the Medicine - and Surgery - allied specialities and Anesthesiology departments for carrying out appropriate speciality-oriented diagnostic and management procedures

    performing target check-ups (on call) in subjects with an increased risk for the onset of the disease and seeking specialist management in Medicine or Surgery allied specialities.

    performing early diabetes detection drives in keeping with the WHO and IDF programs and in agreement with the basic level recommendations.

    HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
    initial phase care in out-patient service, as well as care in unstable and non-regulated diabetes and in cases with complications

    consultative aid and the hospital treatment organization

    SOCIO-MEDICAL CARE
    health education, community visits and consulting patients in cooperation with the basic clinicians

    consultative evaluation of working capability, complete treatment and diet plans

    for making diabetics to be aware, practice and develop diabetic `self-care' skills

    to provide much needed impetus for popularizing the concept of self-care to the diabetics all over the state and nation through the on-going diabetic education programs of the Institute

    for limiting disability, social support and rehabilitation through medico-social services

    FOLLOW-UP OF PATIENTS
    through dispensary methods of work

    keeping documentation and evidence

    compiling annual list of patients and maintaining data on newly registered diabetics in the Central Register for Diabetics for the Andhra Pradesh State

    working out the proposals, for work programs and plans for health care of diabetes in cooperation with basic level

    COOPERATION
    in carrying out health care

    cooperation with all other units of NIMS and teaching Institutions of the State which participate in carrying out measures of diabetes health care.
